Wasteless Wednesday

Don't throw away those Christmas cards put in a bag along with your wrapping paper. Cut the front off and use as gift tags for next year. What to do with photo cards? We put them all in a photo album each year it is fun to then see how the familes change over the years. I love photo cards!

This is a photo of our Christmas Card display along the stairs. We have cards on both sides of the railing. The kids love to stop and look at them.

Here is a freebie for the first day of 2009 http://www.chick-fil-a.com/breakfast/ Free Chick-Fil-A chicken biscuit coupon on your next visit when you purchase something on January 1st. Enjoy!

Tuesdays Tip

I don't know about you but every year I start out with the same resolution, loose weight or not gain weight. Take a look at my family blog I completely fell off the bandwagon yesterday :(

What I find is lower cal and fresher ingredients are more expensive at the grocery store but not more expensive at your locals farmers market.

If you have a local farmers market take a look around and visit and make part of your weekly shopping routine for your fresh veggies (if cheaper).

I need your help fellow frugal readers, I am looking for great low fat recipes and tips that help you stay fit. Any great products you think work great?

Wasteless Wednesday

Texas winters are usually pretty mild. We get spurts of cold weather. Well we are in one right now. It is 27 degrees outside as I type this. It got me thinking, more energy saving tips to keep you warm and your pocket book full.
  • Close your drapes or blinds, sounds easy and it really works!
  • Closing your interior doors doesn't help your heating it actually makes it work harder (found this from a heating and air conditioning co.)
  • If all else fails cuddle up in a blanket on the couch and read a book :)

Frugal Recipes

I've had some request from my menu this week. I will post my recipes each week with my menus.

We tried the chicken Alfredo this week for the first time. It was the best Alfredo ever, plus it is lower fat. Here is the recipe http://www.kraftfoods.com/kf/recipes/fettuccine-alfredo-chicken-111228.aspx . I get a lot of recipes from www.kraftfoods.com sign up for their free food & family magazine with tons of recipes.

This is one of my easy favorites my my mom.
Nana’s Taco Soup –Jennifer Rudd

What you need:
1 pound of ground beef cooked and drained
1 can of black beans (drained)
1 can of pinto beans (drained)
1 can of red kidney beans (drained)
1 can of mexicorn (drained)
1 powder packet of ranch dressing mix
1 packet of taco seasoning mix
1 can of rotel
2 cans of diced tomatoes
2 cups of water

I blend the tomatoes and rotel in the blender I don’t like chunky tomatoes.
Put all this in a crock pot and cook on low for 3 hours and 1 hour high. Top with shredded cheese. We eat with nacho chips.

Thrifty Thursday

I found a great site for cheap meal ideas. She posts dinners that are $5 or less. Check it out! http://www.5dollardinners.com/

Do you have any other sites that list cheap recipes? Leave a comment and let me know.

Wasteless Wednesday

I can't believe it is Wednesday already, this week is flying by.

My kids and husband love drinking bottled water when we are on the go. Any time we head for the mommy van they have to grab water out of the fridge. Stop wasting money on bottled water every week. After they finish wash in the dishwasher fill back up with new (tap) water or (filtered) water and put in the fridge. These bottles will last a couple months or so before you need new ones. It saves a little money and they can still grab them on the go. When the bottles are ready for the trash remember to recycle!

Tuesdays Tips

Host a sweets exchange with friends this Christmas! This is a great way to add to your sweets collection, what is Christmas without a ton of cookies and other yummy treats? Here is how it works:

  • Each friend bakes 1/2 dozen sweets per person attending. If you have 10 people attending you need 5 dozen.
  • Wrap them up is 1/2 dozen to share, I love decorating cute little bags.
  • At the exchange bring a box or large bag and bring home your goodies!
  • We set some out in the cake stand and freeze the rest to pull out slowly over the next couple weeks.
  • Here are the cake balls I made. Not exactly perfectly round like the one's that bakerella makes.

My six to bring to the party. I got these cute little baskets for 50 cents. I put the cake balls in a plastic bag and tied curlies around the top.

Here are the some of the ladies in our neighborhood for our neighborhood Christmas sweets exchange. Carri and Kelly did a great job hosting this year. We had crafts and each of the sweets were laid out in different areas of her house. Great time!

Thrifty Thursday- Shoe Swap Party

Are you having a party with your girls, try something different this year. A shoe swap party! Each person brings their unwanted shoes, but not the tacky nasty ones. Bring the shoes that you simply don't wear but are in good condition. I have a ton of dress shoes from my past of being in corporate America. (this goes for kid shoes too)

Set out the shoes and have fun! You could always ask your friends in advance their size and make sure to have some others with the same size attending.
PS.. Make sure you invite that friend who has FABULOUS shoes that match every outfit!

Wasteless Wednesday - Holiday Gift Ideas

Don't Waste Reuse!

Pringles Cans- clean them out and cover with wrapping paper, fill with homemade cookies. What a great gift!

Glass jars- I am saving our glass jars for homemade salsa. You can also use them for homemade hot chocolate for Christmas gifts. I will be posting my mom's secret recipe soon.

Old Christmas Cards- Don't throw away your Christmas cards after the holiday is over. Cut strips of the design and reuse next year as holiday gift tags.

Old Evening Gowns and costume jewelry- put in a box for your kids, friends kids or grandchildren. Kids love to play dress up. If the dresses are really long cut them shorter for kid length and use the extra fabric as a wrap.

Brown Paper Grocery Bags- opt for paper and save the paper bags, get the paints out and let your kids decorate the paper with red and green paint then wrap presents.

White Elephant Gift Exchange- at least one holiday party partakes in this annual tradition. Find something you don't use that others might enjoy.

Tuesday, December 2, 2008

Tuesdays Tip

Don't order out, make your own pizza. About once week usually Friday nights we have MYOP that is was we call it. We all sit in the living room with our pizza and watch a movie. The kids LOVE it! It is very fun to make. You can have thin crust or deep dish, we each put our favorites on our pizzas. I love cheese and jalapeno, my husband loves pepperoni and pineapple. The kids like pepperoni and cheese. For around $10 we can make 5 pizza's custom made to order. (As you can see I am still waiting for the new countertops)

We used our Friday's Free Coupon!

After church today, the two older kids went with Mimi to decorated her house for Christmas. So it was me and my hubby and baby. We went to TGIFridays to use the coupon I found last week for a FREE Appetizer up to $8 value.
It was so YUM! We pigged out we got the FRIDAYS LOADED NACHOS, it was huge and I loved it! It was $7.99 so that was as close to the $8 as we could get. We had great service and enjoyed our lunch. Josh got the Jack Daniels Burger, ate a little of his and little bit of Madeline's kids chicken tenders. I forgot how much I love Fridays! Glad the coupon brought us back.

After the big lunch I came home and took at 2 hour nap with baby. What a great end to the long weekend. Another stuffed belly!

Thursdays Thanksgiving Tips

Thanksgiving is in 1 week! Lot's to do if you are having dinner at your house. Luckily this year we are off to my parents and Josh's moms side of the family. I am making pumpkin pie that is all. Yeah!

  • Most grocery stores offer free turkey deals. Watch for the ad's. I've never paid for a turkey always free! We usually get 2 (my husband gets one from work).
  • Keep your pretty china pretty and clean, just put a clear plastic (thick) plate over your china for dinner.
  • Serve your food buffet style, this reduces the stress.
  • Line your glass dishes with foil for easy clean up (this really works)
  • Make casserole ahead of time and heat up right before
  • Have everyone visiting bring a dish to help out the cook. Tell them what to bring so no duplicates.
  • Did your kids already make their own special place mats or place cards?
  • If you run across any empty butter containers or cool whip one's save for easy leftover storage.

Waste Wednesday

I am going to break my no waste rule. Sometimes you need to be wasteful. I am saying good-bye to the bottom of the bowl candy leftover from Halloween. It has developed a funky smell with all the mixed candy. If it didn't stink I could:
  • Top cupcakes with candy
  • Sprinkle in Stockings for Christmas
  • Break up chocolate bars and mix in cookies
  • Leave to eat on my sugar binges
  • Continue to load the kids up with sugar and visit the dentist with rotten teeth :)

Frugal Jen has decided to be wasteful for once Good - Bye Candy! Mommy's hips and tummy will miss you :) This jar was overflowing just a few weeks ago. What makes it smell funny anyways? Am I the only one who has this problem?

Motivating Mondays

Pay It Forward today...

We've all noticed the economic downturn, that is why I am sharing my frugal tips to help others. I've been frugal for a long time but I am always looking to be more frugal. I've found blogs where women have set amount for groceries for a year like $600 (I wish I could remember that site), WOW! I find ways and ideas from other women.

I would like to list a couple blogs I like to follow on being frugal. Why don't you pay it forward send an email to a friend about a frugal blog. Leave a comment if you have other frugal sites you like to visit.

Here are some of my favorites:

Wasteless Wednesday - Save Your Corks

My husband and I enjoy red wine. After we uncork a bottle I save the corks. For a long time I had them in a decorative jar then I saw a FABULOUS idea at a friends house a wine cork board. I went home and made one that day and this is what I came up with.

Here is how you do it:

  1. Find a large picture frame your are not using 11 X 14 or larger. I bought this simple black one at wal-mart for $5
  2. I cut the corks in half (easy not to slice a finger, I assume no liability)
  3. Remove the glass from the frame and discard (don't have any frugal tips for the glass)
  4. Arrange the cut corks in the frame along the card board backing of the frame.
  5. Once you have a good pattern remove one at a time and hot glue on the cardboard backing.
  6. Enjoy your new cork board. I have mine over my desk with birthday party invites and announcements to display and remind me what we have coming up.

Tuesdays Tips - Save on Electric

I am feeling much better today, my mouth is still sore from the 2 fillings. I forgot how much those hurt! Too bad I didn't have any coupons for the dentist :(

Tip #1: Do your laundry in cold water. I started doing this a couple years ago. I do all my laundry except bed sheets and towels in cold water. It saves on your electric bill. I have noticed a difference in our electric bill being lower. This is a tip everyone can use we all have to clean our clothes.

Tip #2 : Adjust your thermostat. Here in Texas we are in the fall season which can range from 86 to 40 degrees. We have a programmable thermostat. During the day I have the house set for 80 degrees for the air conditioning and 70 degrees for the heat. I rarely have it cycle on during the day. I also open up the windows and let some fresh air in and it naturally cools or warms the house.

Tip #3: Replace your light bulbs. We've replaced many of our light bulbs with the new energy savings fluorescent bulbs. I haven't changed all the bulbs because it looks silly sticking out of ceiling fans and some light fixtures. But every little bit helps :)

Motivating Mondays

Do something good for yourself today. Being frugal is about spending smartly. For me I am going to get a smoothie today. A little indulgence, I am having dental work done and I will treat myself to the $5.00 smoothie normally I pass on.

I should be blogging tomorrow about Tuesday's Tips. Hopefully I will be feeling good after my dental stuff. Now, that is something I HATE spending money on.

Wasteless Wednesday

My husband and I consume a lot of Diet Coke. In the evening when I am picking up after everyone I find half full or half empty (depends on how you look at it). I get upset when it is wasted and I have to pour it down the drain.

I did an experiment. I bought the plastic bottles that hold about 10 oz. When someone doesn't finish it goes back into the fridge. It worked! It also reduced the amount we were drinking each week. So two things were accomplished.

You can also try this with the large bottles. I think these taste better than the metal cans.

Try it and tell me if works!

Tuesdays Tips "Girls Night In"

I love having dinner with the girls, but it gets expensive fast. With a frozen drink or martini at $8 or more a pop, plus a meal you are easily out $40 or more. Instead of meeting the girls out, have a GIRLS NIGHT IN.
  • Get the girls together, meet at each others homes and rotate homes each month
  • Have a theme example : Tex-Mex, Chinese food, Fondue, Desserts
  • Each person is assigned an item to bring plus a part of the drinks for that night
  • Watch a favorite TV show together or play a game (Bunko for large groups)

Think about the savings! This is a great way to have a good time and for those on tight budgets can also enjoy girls night in!

This has me thinking I so need to plan one of these! Maybe a holiday theme around Christmas for us local blogger buddies?

Here is a freebie contest I found. One of my favorite bloggers, McMommy has a BFF that makes these cute clothes and she is giving it away just leave a comment to be entered. The contest ends today: http://themcmommychronicles.blogspot.com/2008/11/story-of-my-bff-and-how-you-will.html Here is a link to Lil Palm clothing to see all her cute stuff http://www.lilpalm.com/

Big Item on "Want List"

To start off the post here is a photo of my current counter tops. We've done a lot of updating with this house but the light teal blue doesn't match the warm colors we've updated to. Can't you just see shinny granite and a slate back splash?
We went out this weekend to do some comparison shopping for my big item on my "want list" the granite counter tops. Here is some of my tips:
  • Look and price the alternatives, pro's and con's.
  • Check out Lowe's and Home Depot they will give you some free kitchen designing booklets to help you in your search
  • Get at least 3 estimates! No less. You can use them to negotiate for a lower price.
  • Make a list of any other items that need to be upgraded when you do this project. Example: new sink, faucet, stove top, vent hood, back splash. Add those costs in to the project cost.
  • Slowly update the appliances. We are changing out the appliances from white to stainless steel. As you can see from the photo we did the big item the fridge. We negotiated a floor model when they were getting rid of last years models. We got it 40% off the asking price!
  • Eliminate surprise costs and know exactly what to budget for.

Our update: Well we are still in the planning stage and really l0oking at which material we want to use. This is a big purchase for the kitchen and most expensive upgrade.

Wasteless Wednesdays

Here are some tips to cut back on your monthly budget and stop wasting your money. These ideas were given to me by my "Frugal Friend January". She is just as frugal as me if not more :) We always discuss being frugal together.
  • Do you have a gym membership you don't use? "Get Real" about either going or cancel your membership. For me this is my monthly splurge I go 5 days a week to my gym. The kids love to play in the kids area it is my daily babysitter. This is something that I don't waste I get all my money's worth. Find out about your gyms activities and kids area. Also check out the classes, try a new one and see what you think. My favorite is Kickboxing!

  • Consolidate your errands and shopping trips. Make a list and do all of them at once instead of wasting gas and making too many trips.

  • When you eat out share a meal with someone or put half of it in a to-go box and eat for lunch or dinner the next day. When me and my frugal friend recently went to dinner we drank water, skipped the $8 margaritas, shared fajitas, and loaded up on the free salsa and chips. Afterwards we went next door to Market Street and shared a pre-sliced piece of cake Yum! I think we each spent $8 total for a girls dinner!

Motivating Mondays

Remember that "Want List" from last week.
  • Prioritize your list and estimate cost

  • Budget it in, don't just go and buy it, set up a savings account for big household purchases

  • Pass on the 0% interest credit cards for so many months offers to purchase it

  • Just try and pay cash for it don't charge it

Remember my items: Here is my plan

  • Haircut for me- well still hasn't happened. It is budgeted for next month I just need to commit to a style. I have long hair and want to cut it short. Any tips?

  • New winter clothes for me - well this is not budgeted in yet my husband and I are having discussions about the course of action. Basically I need a new wardrobe last year was post maternity. I do plan to get some new jeans I will have to blog on my personal site about my shopping trip I refuse to buy that size.

  • Granite counter tops- we have a home savings account that we deposit money into each month. We have a priority list of home projects. Unfortunately last month we had to replace the fence which too a huge amount away from my counter tops. So hopefully in the next year I will get them. But my husband also thinks he has some big items on that list like a man room

Wasteless Wednesdays

As a mother of 3 children I love hand me downs or clothes swap especially for my younger kids. I love to shop at kids resale shops. A few in the DFW area are:
My very favorite way to get clothing is swapping! Madeline has recently gotten some great hand me downs from a few of my friends. It is like Christmas morning for mommy opening up the bags and seeing what we've got then trying them on the kids. So much fun! Thank you Shannon, Brandi and Jodi!!!

Ways to find clothing swaps, do you participate in a playgroup or have co-workers with children maybe a year older than yours? In exchange for some clothes why don't you make the other mom a batch of homemade cookies or a casserole dinner. Many moms simply give their old clothes to goodwill or sale them at a garage sale they are probably sitting in their closets or attics and they would love to pass them on and free up some much needed space.

Here is a photo of Madeline in one of her new outfits!

Tuesdays Tips

Bakery Outlets!!! We have a Mrs. Baird's Bread Bakery outlet near our house. We take a trip out every week. I purchase extra bread and put it in the freezer. The kids love to go because I buy them a big bag of powdered donuts. They huge bag is over $3 at the grocery store but only 89 cents at the outlet. Same for the bread only 89 cents a loaf. Mrs. Baird's sells for about $3.50 a loaf at my grocery store. If you spend more than $6 you get a free product. Here is what we got last week. My favorite is the big fat Texas Toast! I spent $6 and some change for all of this:

Motivating Mondays The "Want List"

We are going to start slow with being frugal. If you are new to this too much too fast will be overwhelming. I know it was for me. I want you to write down on a piece of paper or your blackberry (we will get to that later) a WANT list. Let's keep the list short the 3 most important things you think you want you probably think you need them. These would be things like a new purse, clothes, shoes or things that you think you must get and look great.

Here on Frugal Fabulous I am going to help you get things you really want but, we are going to get there a better way then just plopping down the credit card at the overpriced department store or boutique. I want to have nice things and live within my means and we will get you there too. It is all possible. We ALL have those wants for nice things and they motivate us to save or do more to get them. I will help you overcome the trap of buying them if you can't afford them.

Keep the WANT list handy and always in your purse we are going to address this list on MOTIVATING MONDAYS and have goals to get you there. Post a comment and tell me some of your wants.

Here are my 3 WANTS:

  1. Granite counter tops for my kitchen

  2. New winter clothes (jeans that fit)

  3. A new cute short hair cut.

We are getting ourselves motivated by looking at our WANTS now we will get closer to getting them and getting them at the right time not being impulsive!
Tomorrow, I will post Tuesday Tips, a quick easy way to save money!

Wasteless Wednesdays!

I am late blogging today. Me and the kids were busy at FREE story time at our public library this morning. That brings me to the tip for today. Why waste money buying books when you can rent them for FREE! We have a great new public library, the kids love going to check out books. If you do have to purchase books go to Half-Priced Books or the Barnes & Noble sale section.

We also got 3 FREE MOVIE RENTALS, at the public library. We canceled our subscription to the online movie rentals which was about $10 a month and now rent movies at the library. They even have new releases! Today we checked out The Animated Transformers, Bob the Builder and for mom and dad the Astronaut Farmer.

Check out your public library, lots of free fun! We even made new friends today:) Here is a photo of Will with our FREE MOVIE RENTALS!

Tuesdays Tips Plus an almost freebie!

Tuesdays Tip: Grocery Shopping

  • Go to the grocery store on a full tummy, if you go hungry you will buy more.
  • Set a time limit to be in the store and make sure you wear a watch. Next time you are at the grocery store notice they have no clocks. The longer you are in there the more you spend.
  • If possible leave the kids at home, little hands grab and add items secretly to your cart. If you bring the little one's make sure you bring a small bag of snack foods like chips or cereal this will keep those little hands busy and their tummies full.
  • ALWAYS HAVE A GROCERY LIST!!
  • I will tell you in posts to come about how I meal plan and ways to find savings.

Almost Free Product:

To reward you all for visiting my blog here is an almost free product, carrots at Target some of you might actually get them for free! My Target has the advertised price at $1.29 and would not accept the 99 cents coupon from the online store but I got them for 29 cents! Print this online coupon for $1 off carrots. http://sites.target.com/site/en/supertarget/page.jsp?title=coupons_specials

Motivating Mondays "Looking for List"

Keep a LOOKING FOR LIST. What is this? Write down a list on paper or any electronic device you keep with you. This list will contain small inexpensive items you are on the lookout for. For example my looking for list has: a lamp for Kate's room, jeans for Will and fall smelling candles. If I have a birthday coming up I put this person on my looking for list.

The reason for this list is when I am out and I happen to have time to run in a store (discount store like Target, TJ Maxx etc..) I will look for these items. I DO NOT get away from this list no matter what other "cute" or "sale" items I see. Because those other things are not on my looking for list and will most likely be put in a closet or forgotten. Just because you find something that is a GREAT DEAL, it doesn't mean you have to buy it!

Try a LOOKING FOR LIST this week and see what happens. I bet you save money by not buying other little items that come your way. When you leave the store with only the things you are looking for you will feel GREAT, you will have overcome the temptation to impulse buy and have no regrets later :) Plus you will have saved money, which means more money in the bank for important purchases, which we will talk about next week on Monday!

Tomorrow will be Tuesday Tips! This is a quick easy tip we can all use to be FRUGAL FABULOUS!

Sunday, October 12, 2008

Welcome to Frugal Fabulous!

Welcome! This is my first official blog on Frugal Fabulous. I will be writing several times a week with quick and easy tips to save money. A little about myself. I am a recovering extravagant shopper, I am now known as very frugal by by friends and family. With the recent events and the trend for people to live within their means I thought this would be a FABULOUS time to share my insights and tips. The road has been bumpy being reformed but our family has so much more freedom being frugal. I want people to understand it can be FABULOUS to be FRUGAL. We even went to Disney World and on the Disney Cruise this summer so being frugal isn't about cutting off all the "wants" it is about balance. I hope you enjoy this blog and forward it on to friends. Tomorrow on Monday I will posting my first tip. Monday blogs will be called, "Motivating Mondays".
Here is a photo of my Frugal First Family!
