Funky Chair Redo

On my weekly trip into town I almost always stop in the local Goodwill and check out their chairs. I've been on a hunt for some chairs with personality,

My desk and sewing table need new chairs and I want to make them fun.

Right inside the door I found a pair of 1970's chairs with really cool curves and details. Sold $10! I pulled out my trusty Heirloom White and got busy painting. I didn't prime because I knew I wanted to distress and bring out the wood underneath. It took about 3 coats of paint.

I recovered the cushion and took out the basket weave material. It was in bad shape.
Funky soft animal print perfect for my desk!

I used nail heads for the first time. Looks easy... NOT! It was very hard to get them in straight and they were bending all over the place. Next time I'll try something else.

Here they are side by side.
BEFORE and AFTER:

I love the back and the great details. Little Caroline wanted to get in on the fun!

I'm not sure what to do with the 2nd chair. Any ideas? I was thinking egg blue with a burlap seat cushion. It will be my sewing chair.

Goodwill Bench Transformed

I'm baaackk! I felt like I should shout that out as I was painting a piano bench I found for $5 at Goodwill.

For those of you who've read for a while know I loved to spray paint and transform things. Well baby #4 and a move held things up a bit.

I found this messed up and gooed up bench and knew it had potential. Solid wood, score!

We've gone back to the tube TV. Our friends graciously let us borrow the tube while we try to figure out what the heck to do. Remember we had a 55 inch flat screen and had custom built in's at the old place.

I regress, back on subject....

See it was pretty shabby. I kept it with a basket of our shoes for a whole day before I prettied it up.

I used my favorite Heirloom White paint and English Chestnut stain and bingo a new side table.

Caroline can't contain her excitement over mommy's new pull up bench.

Gotta say it again, I'm back and ready to paint.

The girls and I are heading to Canton this weekend to turn some trash into treasure.

Spray Painting Knobs Update

This post has been one of my most popular. I get emails each week asking how they held up. Well let me show you.... Not so well.... because I eliminated one little step. Spraying the backside of the handle. It led way to chips and scratches.
Since our house is on the market it was time to refresh.
I pulled out my trust ORB spray paint. It's been a while I missed you.

Much better! Nice and fresh.

Remember it's 1990's glory gold?
I also refreshed the kitchen and bath door pulls. After daily wear and tear a quick refresher coat was necessary.

Spray Paint Magic

I just love spray paint! You can make old things new again.
Check out my latest garage sale find.... wicker patio furniture. It's originally from pier one. Little Miss lounging. I got the cushions at Garden Ridge.
I picked up the set for $30! It just took 8 can's of black spray paint but it's like new!

It's come along way from old and worn out.
Now I am on the lookout for outdoor accessories and a coffee table.

Rust Paint Effect

My friend Nicole gave me this beautiful "R" as a gift. I've had an itch to try a new paint technique. Rust. Here is the final product. Here it is displayed on the mantle next to the family picture.
I started with a brown. The R started out as gold.
I did lots of layers of acrylic colors. I would dry brush on and wipe off with paper towels. Sometimes blotting the towel to create a weathered look.
Here are all the colors I used.
See the shiny gold R in the right bottom corner. That is the before.
I am going to be trying this technique out on a wall at my friend Brandi's photography studio.
I can't wait!

Spray Paint Magic

Look at this beauty...

My friend Misti was selling it at her garage sale. I took it off her hands for a transformation.

Come along the journey from 80's southwest to antiqued and up to date. First I applied a primer over the whole thing. This is a good time to paint the frame too.
I painted it with a my favorite American Traditions cream color.
Next step I taped off the glass which is now a chalkboard surface from the frame.
Yes I had a little spot to touch up.
To finish it up I took some stain and rubbed the edges for an antiqued took. Misti has her kitchen cabinets glazed like the frame.

Viola... now she's got a great chalkboard! From Trash to Treasure... I've always wanted to say that.

Going Spray Paint Crazy

Maybe I'm a little high off the fumes but I love to spray paint!

It's been a while since I did a spray paint post. To be honest I've been so swamped I haven't done any home projects.

I can't wait to show my latest project. I did my own version of trash to treasure with an item a friend was selling at a garage sale. I am giving it back to her transformed into something useful.

Tuesdays Tip - More Spray Painting Projects!

I was mourning the loss of the American Traditions Oil Rubbed Bronze (ORB) Spray Paint.

I am glad to announce I found a replacement!!

Now I can finish painting the door knobs down stairs. I found these great containers at Kirkland's. Only problem I did not like the gold tops.
A little spray paint and metallic glaze... perfect!
I removed the lids and sprayed them.
It gave almost a black look so I used some metallic craft paint to antique it a bit. The lid on the left was glazed the right one was only the ORB spray paint.

Spray Painting Plastic

Anyone else out there in a constant state of craziness? Long weekends are supposed to be spent relaxing. Maybe laying out by the pool or taking naps. Not at my house!

We had a big development in our home.... we put up the baby crib and the changing table. Yes, my little miss is now officially a big girl! *sniff, sniff*

Let me share the happenings... First we found this. Yes, our little ballerina is stretching but she can also get out of the crib.

So I got up in the attic to get this old blue bear bed.

Can you believe this was Kate's toddler bed? Will also used it.

Yes, we don't like to get rid of things. Functional and free people!

But.... I cannot put my pink princess in a blue bear bed. So, that means pink spray paint!

Did you know they have special spray paint for plastic?

Well too bad the colors are NOT pink!

So I opted for a clear primer. After I did a coat of that I used the regular Valspar Pink spray paint! I did about 3 coats.

Can you tell she is excited about her new bed?

The finished product and my little miss asleep in her bed. After 5 minutes of crying at the gate she climbed in and went off to sleep.

Yes, I know her lovie is on her head don't worry she can still breathe. This is how she sleeps.
Verdict: It worked! However it did chip in a couple places.

Easy touch up.... nail polish in the same shade!

Wasteless Wednesday - Laundry Room

My laundry room is finally done!!

Remember this post when I spray painted them black?

As I was blog hopping last week I visited Heather's Blog and saw her finished laundry room. It inspired me to finish decorating mine.

I went shopping around my house. I found 2 unused prints and an entertaining trio.

Since I am a muralist I had to paint on the walls. Money spent $0!

I needed to hang up my swiffer and the broom so I just used long nails.

No expensive fancy hard
wear needed.

Yes... I need an new broom it is so ugly!
I want one of those animal print ones from Kirklands.

So long, farewell ugly laundry room!
Now if only I enjoyed doing laundry....

Tuesdays Tip - Still Painting Door Knobs!

I am slowly painting all the door knobs in the house. Really I wanted to make sure the paint didn't chip before I had a house full of not so great door knobs.

Well the verdict.... it works!! Really I am surprised at how well it has held up. Not even one chip in several months.

Remember this is the shiny gold before.
I decided I wanted to paint the pantry door knobs today. So I took off the knobs and headed to the garage for my paint. Bad news, I am out and so is Lowe's! I am on the hunt for oil rubbed bronze spray paint.

If you try this at home make sure to use a metal grey primer first. I got a great tip from a bloggy friend. She painted her doors but topped it off with a poly clear coat.

Black Painted Cabinets

If you are visiting from Kelly's Blog. Click here for the correct post! Sorry :) This post is the process of painting my laundry room cabinets black.

I finished painting my laundry room cabinets black! I really like it. I am looking forward to accessorizing it. Sarah at Thrifty Decor Chick inspired me. She has an amazing laundry room.

This is the current state of my laundry room. I am on the lookout for some great knobs. Let me share my journey... This is the before yesterday morning. I was so tired of the well.. all of it. Notice the far left cabinet is darker. I tried to rub stain on and it just looked dirty. So on a whim I decided to paint them black.

So I took the cabinet doors off. I am not the best organizer. One day I hope to tackle the inside.

I then primed with Kilz white primer I didn't have a brush on gray. Not a good idea. I then tried to paint on the black paint on top of the white primer. It was a streaky mess.

I was too cheap to go to the store to buy a grey primer so I had a brilliant idea to use the spray paint in this small room with no windows. Not such a smart idea the fumes were off the charts. However it did work. I then went over the primer with black paint. Notice my grocery bag's inside the cabinets.. I did this so I didn't have to remove all the junk. It worked!
To prevent the spray paint from going all over the place I used a manila folder to block the area I didn't want to paint.

I put the doors back on and viola they are black. I can't wait to accessorize next week!
